Safety in
the use of grinding wheels: straight cut-off wheels and
depressed
center wheels used on hand held machines. The
recommendations of this document are only a summary of
the most important precautions.All users must strictly
follow the safety instructions existing in the
laws,decrees and
technical standards of their country and in machine instructions.
All grinding wheels are breakable, it is imperative
that all users take sensible precautions. Abrasive
wheels damaged , improperly mounted or used , are dangerous and
can cause serious injuries to any person in
the vicinity. The term grinding wheel or wheel used
in this text means straight cut-off wheel and depressed center wheel
used on hand held machine.

1. Handling, transport and storage
1.1 Handling
Grinding wheels are fragile and sensitive to
impacts and shocks. Be aware of this when you handle them.
1.2 Transport
The grinding wheels must be handled with care during
transportation.
1.3 Storage
Grinding wheels shall be stored in such a manner that
mechanical damage is avoided and that they are
not subjected to damaging environment. Store in dry , frost free conditions in
special racks or containers. Store in moderate and constant
temperature . Use the wheels held in stock
longest first.

2. Marking
Use only wheels which are properly labeled.Read the
marking and obey the instructions for use. Never exceed
the maximum operating speed of the wheel in RPM or /min.

3. Inspection and tests before
mounting
Make sure that the instructions on the wheel and on the machine are
compatable.
3.1 Visual inspection
Carefully inspect the abrasive wheels: if they are damaged in any way
do not use them.
3.2 Test run
Before use each wheel must be run up to its maximum
operating speed on the machine under
no load conditions for about 30 seconds. Before starting the test run
the wheel guard must be in place. Never use damaged or imperfect wheels,
destroy them.
3.3 Safety equipment
Before starting the cutting-off or grinding operation,
the wheel guard must be in position and fixed securely.
4. Mounting of the grinding wheels, fixation of the
mounting devices Only mount the wheels on machines designed
for the operation . Never use force for mounting . Always use the mounting
flanges supplied with the machine and insure they
are clean, never modify them in any case. Always use
blotters when they are supplied with the wheels. Work pieces shall be
firmly secured before grinding commences. Instructions for use
: Grind and cut only materials for which the
grinding wheel is suitable. Cutting off : keep the wheel
straight in the cut. Grinding :keep the wheel
at an angle of 20-30 degrees with the piece.

5. Safety measures
5.1 Eye protection
Suitable eye protection MUST be worn.
5.2 Other protection
Depending upon the grinding process, suitable protection has to be
used such as:
Ear muffs or equivalent
Gloves
Dust mask
Leather apron or safety clothes
Head cover
Safety shoes
5.3 Protection of the work place
Hand held grinders should be used in such a manner that
sparks fly away from the operator's body or any
flammable
material.
5.4 Safety guards
The wheel guard of the machine must be in position and securely
fixed.
5.5 Stopping the machine
Switch off the machine and allows the wheel to stop completely
before placing it on a bench
or on the floor.
6. Safety pictograms
This pictogram may appear on posters,in
brochures,on packaging,on machines and on grinding wheels or their
labels
